Established in the late 19th century as an agricultural community, the city of Tustin, in Orange County, used to feature groves of apricots and walnuts which later were gradually replaced by Valencia oranges. Almost all the orchards are gone; now the surrounding landscape sprouts houses, schools, and shopping centers instead of trees. But Main Street, though sandwiched by elements of progress, will take you back through the years of Tustin's development, revealing, like a tree's rings, its boom years, its lean times, its changing tastes, and its gradual metamorphosis decade by decade.

When visiting Tustin, be sure to shop at the Tustin Market Place covering an area of 1.6 million square feet. This Market Place has more than 120 stores, restaurants, cafes and theaters. Designed by Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta, it consists of monumental but extremely simplified cubic forms, with anchor stores marked by massive towers roughly 70 feet high displaying the store name.
The center is also unique in that all the store signs are displayed in neon. The buildings are arranged in a ring around a large central series of parking lots and fast-food restaurants. The parking lots are shaded under groves of date palms, and there is some extensive rock landscaping around the perimeter of the center. The parking lots are illuminated by arrays of xenon floodlights set inside the peaks of 100-foot-high towers. The buildings themselves are uniformly surfaced in bright orange, purple, and pink stucco.
